Name: Thelma
Breed: Guinea pig (cavia porcellus), short hair
Color: Agouti, gold
Eyes: Black
Gender: Female
Age: Jan 10, 2000 - Jan 4, 2003
Favorite food: Cucumber, hay
Character: Friendly, curious, not affectionate
Likes: Taking a nap after eating
Dislikes: Pedicure, being caught! being touched!
I got Thelma together with Louise (I couldn't decide which one to chose - so I chose to take both).
They were about the same age, but looked very different (size wise). While Thelma was powerful
and round, Louise was thin.
Thelma was a very friendly and curious guinea pig. She always came to look what I was doing, but she didn't want to be caught or even touched. As soon as she figured that I wanted to catch her, she ran as fast as she could while screaming out loud! It was unbelievable :). She also was a rather loud pig. When she heard something that could mean food, she started squealing. Then the others started too, so I had a nice little concert.
Thelma was always below Martha in the ranking of the group. Although she tried, she could never pass her.
About the age of three Thelma all over a sudden could not eat anymore. It was not a long and ongoing process. In the morning she ate very normal, and in the evening she could not eat on her own. I started hand feeding her, and the next day we went to the vet. It turned out that she had arthritis in her jaw, which might subsequently caused some severe nerve damage. No treatment helped. The situation became worse. Even when feeding her, the food had to be brought rather far back into the mouth so she could swallow it. Unfortunately there was no cure. She is dearly missed.
